Introduction
For your first assignment you are to prepare a model of a popup book.
The model will be rendered
using Pixar's RenderMan for Maya and
their RenderMan (prman) renderer.
The assignment will be completed in 3 steps.
STEP 1
You are to bring to the second studio session a page of simple popup "book" made
of paper or card. The design can be relatively simple. The benefit of making a real popup page
is to ensure you have investigated a variety paper folding techniques. The final computer graphics
popup book (step 3 and step 4) need NOT be a copy of your paper popup. There are many resources on the internet that
will guide you in making a popup page, for example,

and
Six Amazing Pop-Up Paper Sculptures
STEP 2
During the second studio session you will use Maya to create a preliminary digital
copy of your paper popup. The CG model will be used to test a variety of modeling, animation and rendering techniques.
STEP 3
By session 3 you are expected to have completed a high detail version of your popup page as if it were
part of a book. The final renders and technical breakdown
must be completed ready for review at the beginning of session 8.
Although the theme of the popup page is left to your discretion you should
bear these points in mind:
- the popup page must conform to the dimensions of your paper model,
- the popup objects on the page do not have to be physically correct,
- animation of the popup book is optional,
- the popup book can be "staged" on a plain background - an environment is optional.
